Based in our Lincoln office, Morgan has been working at Waldeck since November 2023, where at the age of 20 we welcomed him as a BIM Technician Apprentice.

Morgan is currently studying an apprenticeship in Building services engineering senior technician with an online college and is due to finish in 2025.

Morgan advises, “Don’t wait to apply what you’re learning. Seek out projects, internships, or labs that offer hands-on experience, and connect with others in the field.”

We caught up with Morgan to hear more about their Early Careers Development Programme journey so far:

Hi Morgan! What has your education journey been like so far?

Like many others, I completed my GCSEs before progressing to sixth form, where I pursued my A-Levels. I briefly attended university, but as I was still clarifying my career direction, I decided to use this time to explore my options.

Midway through my first year, I realized that my initial path was not the right fit for me, and I became interested in pursuing a career in engineering.

During the summer, I gained practical experience by working with my brother at a festival hire company, where I assisted with cable installation and generator maintenance. In mid-2023, I discovered an apprenticeship opening for a BIM Technician at Waldeck, which I saw as an excellent opportunity to develop specialized skills in a field that truly aligns with my interests.

What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?

The most interesting project I’ve worked on would have to be the Chesterfield Hospital project, which was already underway when I joined and became my first major assignment. It provided invaluable insight into the role and was also the first project where I participated in an on-site visit. Seeing how the drawings translated into real-world designs was a fascinating experience and gave me a deeper understanding of the practical impact of our work.

What motivates you in your work?

I am driven by the opportunity to continually enhance my skills as I advance in my career. I am passionate about lifelong learning and dedicated to refining my abilities to achieve excellence in everything I do.

How does the company support your professional growth and development?

Morson Group supports my professional growth and development in several impactful ways. This includes offering mentorship from experienced professionals, whether through my line manager or other colleagues, and fostering a collaborative, supportive environment. Additionally, the company has sponsored my college education, enabling me to enhance my technical knowledge and skills.

What are your career aspirations for the next five years?

In the next five years, my primary career goals are to successfully complete my apprenticeship and gain full proficiency in the software and tools we use daily. I am dedicated to mastering all aspects of our workflows, as I believe this expertise will enable me to make valuable contributions to the team.

In addition to honing my technical skills, I am excited to embrace new challenges, whether through complex projects or roles that help me grow in problem-solving and leadership.

What tips would you give to others starting out in industry?

Don’t wait to apply what you’re learning. Look for projects, internships, or labs where you can get hands-on experience and speak to people. All of this helps you develop as a person and reinforce your skills and show employers you’re ready to work in real-world scenarios.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and pushing myself through various hobbies. Recently, I’ve taken up going to the gym, which helps me maintain my fitness and focus.

I’m also passionate about hands-on projects, especially working on cars and building computers. These activities allow me to apply my technical skills in a practical setting while staying up-to-date with the latest trends in automotive and computing technology.
