Based in our Lincoln office, Oliver has been working at Waldeck since 2023, where at the age of 19 we welcomed him as a BIM Technician Apprentice

Oliver is currently studying an apprenticeship in Level 4 Building Services Engineering Senior Technician and is due to finish in 2025.

Oliver shares a helpful tip which he has learnt along the way, which ‘is that the amount of information and pace might look daunting, but there is the support and training there for you to gain the ability to work effectively.’

We caught up with Oliver to hear more about his Early Careers Development Programme journey so far:

Hi Oliver, what has your education journey been like so far?

After completing my GCSEs and sixth form, I chose to pursue a Mechanical Engineering HNC at Lincoln College. This allowed me the flexibility to continue advancing my education while keeping my options open for an apprenticeship.

Engineering and math have always been passions of mine, and I explored various engineering fields throughout my studies. After finishing my HNC in 2024, I completed a work placement with a local construction contractor, which inspired me to change towards the construction industry. During this time, I came across an apprenticeship opportunity with Waldeck – and I took it!

What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?

The most exciting projects I have worked on are Greencore and Chesterfield.

The Greencore project was very interesting, as it was one of the first projects I felt that I had earnt enough responsibility to work more independently on. I had gained enough experience to perform tasks without needing direct input from my line manager, and proven I had enough initiative to ask for help when I required it.

The Chesterfield project was equally rewarding, as it allowed me to visit the site in person for the first time. Seeing firsthand how my drawings were being used and visualising the parts still under construction gave me invaluable insight into the real-world impact of my work.

What motivates you in your work?

Every task requires problem solving and feels like a new puzzle to solve. Since there’s not always an obvious answer, this makes every task even more interesting for me, as each challenge becomes more engaging and rewarding. Working in the industry provides endless learning opportunities and experiences, and I’m motivated by the progress I see in my skills and knowledge over time.

How does the company support your professional growth and development?

Waldeck and Morson fully support my professional growth, providing both the time and support needed to achieve the academic side of my apprenticeship. Senior team members are also always available with valuable guidance.

I also have access to Continuing Professional Development sessions, which offer valuable insights into different areas of the industry. With strong support in my daily work, I’ve been able to learn through completing the tasks I am given.

What are your career aspirations for the next five years?

In the next five years I want to successfully finish my apprenticeship which I’m currently doing, and become an integrated member of the team, having learnt a wide technical knowledge and the skills to perform my role effectively.

What tips would you give to others starting out in industry?

A helpful tip I can give, which I have learnt is that the amount of information and the pace might look daunting but there is the support and training there for you to gain the ability to work effectively.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I have a strong interest in music – I play the guitar and enjoy attending live concerts. I’m also passionate about staying active through running and swimming, and I’m currently training for an upcoming triathlon.
